STORYLINE:
Mexicans dressed as skeletons took to the streets of their capital on Sunday in the annual Catrinas parade.

Dancers and people of all ages filled Reforma Avenue in Mexico City with color as revelers wore costumes and face paint to imitate the dapper Mexican skeletal figure known as “La Catrina.”

“It’s all part of being Mexican, we are Mexican, traditions must be followed because it is super important to let the world know what our culture is,” said Leticia Adasa, a dancer in the parade.

Skeletal images have abounded in Mexico since pre-Hispanic times.

But in 1910, when Mexico was living under the exclusionary policies of dictator Porfirio Diaz, illustrator José Guadalupe Posada sketched the image of La Catrina as a tool for social satire.
